Reflections on Eight-IT’S A STALKER SONG!

Finally, a new recording.

This song was written a long time ago in my bedroom one evening. It was at a time when I was really still learning how to song write and I had this crazy inclination to try and write a really simple and catchy tune. Simply to prove to myself that I could. A few hours later and Eight was written. Entirely, I might add on an cheap Sheaffer acoustic guitar from Colton Piano and Organ (remember them?).

The idea was to be as minimal as possible and as a result the song is really only made up around two chords with a couple incidentals. I was pretty proud of myself, a classic old time two chord rock tune.

Now for the lyrics. I was, and probably still, a horrible lyric writer. However, in the spirit of this song I decided to make it a “phone number song”. Hey, not terribly clever or original but why not, right? The number itself was completely fictional. It wasn’t a number of anybody I knew or anyone in particular. I simply put it together because it rhymed. Again, not terribly clever.

Now the rest of the lyrics came from a memory of a situation very early on in high school, back in the naive days of learning to date. Remember how uncomfortable those days were? So anyway, there was this girl who was a friend of a friend, who I started going on dates with. You know,  movies, bowling alley, or ice skating. Those were about are only choices up on the mountain but I digress. So then the phone calls and late nights talking about whatever and of course all the excitement of  “hey this is my first actual girlfriend”.

Needless to say, it didn’t last long and we both grew rather apathetic to whole thing. In one last effort I invited her the movies one night and she proceeded to articulate several reasons why she could not go. No big deal, I tried. So, I had decided to go anyway with some friends and who do I run into in front of the theater with a couple of her friends flirting it up with some of the other mountain rabble? Yep, you guessed it. Confrontation was unavoidable at this point but we actually had a good laugh about it and remained friends.

I know that ended up being a long story but that was the scenario that the lyrics for Eight were loosely based on (very loosely!). Of course, this was years after the fact. At any rate, the song quickly became part of mine and Jeff’s acoustic play list and I simply paid no more attention to the context of the lyrics other than memorizing them to play live.

Here we are now around thirteen or so years later and recording this song with all that’s involved, having to listen to it over and over and over again. I suddenly realized something about this song I had never thought about before.

It’s a total stalker song!

It’s amazing how time can change your perspective a bit.

So here is the song officially available for your listening pleasure…

Eight-the cheezy pop song or the creepy stalker song…you decide.
