Merry Christmas!

Here are 2 pictures, taken on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, respectively. Hope everybody had a wonderful Christmas and that they were surrounded by those people that they love most, as I was.

December 24, 2008

Shirley was snug as a bug in a rug in her dog coat. Greyhounds have very thin skin, almost no body fat, and only a veneer of fur – so they get cold much quicker than most other dogs.

December 25, 2008

I tried taking pictures of a rubber ducky, but they didn’t turn out, so I decided to try catching a match as it was lit. This was the only shot out of 23 to be in focus and luckily it was also in mid-light. This turned out to be more complicated than anticipated, meaning that I’ll have to experiment with it again someday … preferably after my head has cleared from dizziness of inhaling sulphur fumes.

This entry wants it’s two front teeth.

Freeway Overpass

I thought it would be cool to take a long exposure shot of the freeway from an overpass. So Rece and I went to one not far from our place and snapped a few shots. They didn’t come out very well because of the tighter-mesh chain link fence and the amount of ambient lighting from all the street lights behind us, to the sides of us – it was rather disappointing. We got back into the car and decided to try elsewhere, but then it started to rain. Looks like Mother Nature didn’t want us taking pictures – or she just liked the ones we already took.

December 23, 2008

I know, it isn’t a bad shot, but it isn’t what I was going for – but I wasn’t going to go to any great length to come up with another photo idea today, either.

Just one more week of the daily photo project left. We’ll see what I can come up with between now and then.

This entry finds it difficult to come up with ideas at times.

Evil Lego Lives

I’ll definitely have to try doing this month of photos project again – but in Summer, when I have more daylight. I’m finding that I’ll get stuck helping out clients and working that when I’m done it’s already close to 5:00 pm and it’s almost dark outside! Add to that my inherent tendency towards procrastination and it’s proving to be unusual to find me posting a shot that was taken during the day. At least I try to have fun with it!

 December 22, 2008 - Evil Lego Lives

I keep Evil Lego in my camera bag. It was done so that if I ever happened to find a bad situation happening that I could take a picture of, I might be able to place Evil Lego in the foreground so that it might look as though he might have had something to do with it. So far it hasn’t happened, but I’ll be carrying him around with my camera from now on. Expect to see more of him from time to time.

This entry isn’t bad; it’s just drawn that way.

F**K

I find it fascinating that 4 letters can upset or excite people just by uttering the sounds they make. Words have power; it’s people that give words the power that they possess. If this word was the name of a beautiful flower, it would evoke a completely different feeling in people.

December 21, 2008 - Fuck

Fuck is one of my favorite words. It isn’t a word that I use constantly, but often enough when I feel it’s right. It’s a versatile word that can be used to convey a wide range of feelings or to accentuate a point. I probably don’t find it nearly as offensive as many people do, but I have learned that it should be used sparingly or not at all around some people.

This entry likes its dictionary.

Early Christmas

Christine’s daughter, Sam, flies back to New York every year to spend winter break and Christmas with her father. For the last 3 years Rece and I have had the pleasure of joining them for their celebration of Christmas the day before she leaves. We share their tradition of orange cinnamon rolls and exchanging gifts and spending time together doing some fun things.

Despite how it may appear, Sam wasn’t tired or in a bad mood – I just caught her off-guard.

 December 20, 2008

To be honest, the original shot wasn’t very good at all. When I opened it in Photoshop I didn’t have a clue as to what to do with it, so I just fixed the red eye and let Photoshop auto correct the tone, color, contrast, etc and then I cropped it to what you see here. I think it turned out pretty good.

This entry now understands that a bad shot can sometimes be a good one.

Sushi

My boss let us go home a little early and I was hungry, so Rece and I went out for sushi. Rece’s favorite place is a revolving sushi joint called Kura Sushi, so we went there. Beating the dinner rush meant having a shot down the center of the rotating conveyor full of sushi and almost no people.

December 19, 2008

I like how the rows of sushi are out of focus with the tree and its reflection are crisp. Admittedly this wasn’t on purpose, as I was messing with the focus with each shot – of which only 2 turned out.

This entry enjoys raw fish on rice.

Shouldn’t you be driving?

While driving home I started taking pictures as I drove, with the camera set to bulb so tail and head lights would streak across the image. Those didn’t turn out very good, so I tried again while driving to Christine & Sam’s place to meet them for dinner.

 December 18, 2008 - Shouldn't you be driving?

I took quite a few shots, and more than just this one turned out pretty neat, but Rece and I liked this one the best.

This entry enjoyed the pot roast and pie!

I was sick, OK?

I ended up going home early yesterday and fell asleep for about 5 hours before waking up. I sat on the sofa under a blanket sipping juice and tea, watching TV for awhile before I realized that I hadn’t taken a picture yet. So I got my ass up, grabbed my camera, and took a quick and uncomplicated picture.

 December 17, 2008

This is a shot of Rece on the phone AND computer with his girlfriend. That messy room will soon get very clean …

This entry coughed and sneezed through the day.

Taco Tuesday

There’s this sort of regular thing we (Christine, Sam, Rece, and I) do almost every Tuesday. It started off when Christine was taking some more college courses and asked if we wouldn’t mind hanging out with Sam while she was in class on Tuesday evenings. To make things easy (and cheap) we began going to Del Taco for their cheap, 3 for $ .99 tacos. This got old real fast, so we began checking out other local taco places for their dollar taco specials. We now have a few places to choose from – and while it isn’t always tacos, it tends to be Latino cuisine,

Tonight I thought it would be fun to make tacos at home with fresh ingredients and fry our own tortilla shells for a change. As usual, the tacos were delicous, but we ended up with some extra shells left over.

 December 16, 2008 - Taco Tuesday

Had I been thinking about it earlier, I would have snapped some photos of the tacos we actually ate. Delicious!

This entry can’t believe how unbelievably boring this post has been.

Nam

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t take many photos of people. So today I decided to try a natural photo of my buddy, Nam.

December 15, 2008 - Nam

Nam is the other tech at the company I work for. Like me, he’s almost entirely self-taught. He grew up in Vietnam and moved to the U.S.A. as an adult. His accent is pretty thick, but he works hard to correctly pronounce words so he’s clearly understood. He’s a great guy to work with and smart as hell – not to mention having a sharp sense of humor.

He was a bit reluctant to allow me to take his picture; knowing that I’d be posting it here. But he relented after I promised that I’d delete the photo if he didn’t like it. Apparently he did.

This entry thinks people photography isn’t as scary anymore.
